PERSONAL UPDATES
I’m back in the UK just in time to catch the last of the autumn. Morning coffees are presently enjoyed under the cover of complete darkness. UK time adjustment for daylight savings seems to be a week late to the punch of the natural world. Looking ahead into the crystal ball for winter, I am seeing a lot of black & white and high ISO speed films in my near future! As well as testing out Lomo Turquoise, Santa 100, CatLabs X 320, and something else super secret :)
The Vitamin D supplementation is also happening now with the shorter days and afternoon teas with milky Oat Barista are plentiful.
PODCAST!
Billy from the Music and Photography podcast kindly invited me to join him for an episode! He is a great podcast host, I enjoyed listening to this one before he got in touch with me and highly recommend it! He has a relaxed and friendly way about him and put my nerves to ease the moment we got on zoom.
Check it out at your local podcast retailer :) or here on the Sunny 16 presents website :)

LOMOGRAPHY
There is also a new article on Lomography’s magazine site about my travels to Northern Cyprus shortly before the pandemic. It’s half interview format. Check it out if this sounds interesting!
I used Lomography’s CN400 film for a few adventures around the island, which involved ending up on a deeply potholed road in the middle of no-where late at night staring down an old military barricade of barbed wire in the headlights of a tiny rental sedan trying to cross the border into Northern Cyprus, apparently illegally. Thanks Google Maps!

HALLOWS EVE
Today is the eve of hallows eve, or the eve of Halloween.
Last year, I shot a spooky monster film from FPP (Film Photography Project) called Wolfman.
This is what FPP says about the film.
“WolfMan is a new panchromatic BW film delivers great tonal range, processes standard BW and pops easily into all 35mm cameras from point-and-shoot to single lens reflex. Due to its wide exposure latitude the film gives excellent results (as ISO 40) or underexposed (as ISO 400) without any change in processing. Flexible and fun, perfect for your Halloween events.”
This video is WAY cringe, but if you want to see what Wolfman looks like, I guess you can watch it? :) The music at the beginning is probably the best part!
This year I am trying out their new limited edition Mummy 2022 film!
FPP says about this film:
“This medium-grain, medium contrast film with an iso of 400 is as ideally suited for striking portrait photography as it is for street photography and action shots! The Mummy is a negative film stock (on a triacetate base) formulated from our FPP Cine16 400 film.”
I won’t have the results ready for this week’s Substack, but stay tuned for the next one! My plan is to wander the streets of Cardiff on Halloween to hopefully find some spooky themes and potentially some impressive costumes…weather depending of course! :) Being a 400 speed film, I might just push it to 800 or 1600 to shoot later into the eve. Or shoot it in a camera with flash! We shall see…
Have you shot any of the FPP Monster films?
I do have a standing request for FPP and that is if another new monster film comes out, I’d like to have a female character please. Women can be scary too!! How about Carmilla? The Wicked Witch of the West? Medusa?
Just check this list out here :)
History of Hallows Eve and Modern Practices
Celts brought the tradition of Samhain. Catholics brought on All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Mexico celebrates el Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). All with similar beliefs that the veil between worlds thins and we remember/celebrate those who have passed as well as the life we still have today.
Tomorrow some individuals will dress up in movie character costumes and get obliterated by alcohol dancing to Thriller and the Monster Mash. Others will end up drifting off on the sofa surrounded by kiddos dumping out their plastic pumpkin buckets, eyes gleaming with excitement over their loot from a day/night of hard work asking neighbors for treats, definitely not tricks.
Others simply have a regular day because Halloween or Hallows Eve is nothing special to them.
So, what will you be doing tomorrow? Nothing is also an acceptable answer!

Great writing!!! Let’s hope the “mummy” can out-do the “wolfman” for this Halloween!?!? 🎃
thank you! haha we shall see! I don't think I saved enough frames for the Wolfman last year so he didnt really get comfortable with the role...this year he has been pre prepped!
