After about seventeen years on fb I finally pulled the plug recently. As you say, it's really no longer a good place be, though shall miss the contact will friends and family. I hope all goes well for you here on Substack. It does seem to be an oasis of calm with some amazing creativity.

Oh, and good luck with the chickens!

Amen! I will admit I will miss your videos. But hey at least I can still see your content here! Also I have an event planned this summer in Toronto. I’ll make sure to get the details to you!

That would be awesome! I definitely want to do a roadtrip up there this year - and I might test a few videos here on Substack, they seem to be pushing more video features! I have a couple more scheduled for YouTube but yeah it’s totally fallen off for me

I left facebook and twitter years ago. Bluesky is pretty good. Unfortunately Substack has its issues, but so far they are less egregious.

very true - Substack has been in the spotlight recently for a few things, now that more eyes are turning to it.

bluesky might looks like twitter but is not like twitter. at least for the moment it's add free and doesn't invade your space by showing you "recommendations" (like i'm stupid and i don't know what i want for myself) or person xyz liked this or that.

Expand full comment
Molly Kate's avatar

It always defaults for me on the 'discover' page, which is the recommendations section. Is there a way to change it to default on the 'following' page?

Expand full comment
perfectlight's avatar

i don't know, i set it to "following" at the start and didn't have any problems since

i even gave you a "follow" for when you're ready 😊

love that attitude Molly, give Zuch and the Chinese HELL, all they want is your personal data to send elsewhere!!!

PS: I am a man, and a photographer,(with Autism), but we don't just look at your sites for what you think, we like fresh perspectives, and people like Peter Coulson do boudoir or portrait shooting, and some of us just want to see landscapes, like "captured by Sam" does, we aren't people 'shooters'{film or Digital folks :-)}, we do other things, and its nice to "talk" to, or watch people who think different, or use different gear, not the boring Canon or Nikon, but Mamiya, Hasselblad, Toyo, Wista, and others, where the process is just as important as the result, the gear is beautiful, the film is unique, has 'grain' and personality, and we see your soul in the photos on the page, not a bland commercial ad.

We shall continue to connect Molly. 💪📸🎞️☺️ You say so much that I also feel. I'm in the middle of trying to sort out my email newsletter list, so that I can actually step away more from social media whilst I figure out which are the next-best platforms to be on.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings on it all. It helps the rest of us not feel so alone!

Molly Kate's avatar

Absolutely!! 💯 the email list is so so nice to have when social media goes haywire - do you have a preference of any of the platforms? I also saw there’s a new one Neptune coming out but so many of the new ones can’t seem to hold against Meta sadly but I always have hope lol and thanks for leaving me a note so I know I’m not alone either! I try to think, if I’m thinking it, there’s gotta be at least one other person thinking it too 😊

I’m glad to still have you here!! I haven’t heard of the new policy about women being referred to as property??? 😳 what the actual @+5%? Keep on going and I think disconnecting is so healthy! Trying to do more of that myself especially lately!!!💙

Molly Kate's avatar

Thank you!! They removed a bunch of protections in their moderation policy that prevented people from saying things like that so now you can and they wont moderate it, there were a few other things too, removing their DEI policy - wanting the office to have more ‘’masculine’ energy lol if you google I think you’ll find more but that was all I needed to know! But yea totallly disconnecting is so so good 😊 nice to hear from you though!

I don't blame you Molly, I'm still on META because that's where my tribe is, I am however getting fed up with their automated moderation AI consistanlty screwing stuff up. I am on BlueSky and as a Twitter alumni, it feels like home. I have wrap my brain around Substack and how it works.

Molly Kate's avatar

Ohh yeah that’s a good point about the AI I didn’t mention! I saw that Meta will create AI people profiles now too lol but I’m glad that BlueSky works for you! I don’t think Substack is that great for the kind of scrolling social media so I’m trying to use it as a way to find newsletters and then get those updates in my email vs checking the app daily (as a user of course, writer is a bit different!)

Substack I think is going to be home for long form content. I'm getting a little sick of having AI baked into everything, maybe it's the crusty Gen Xer in me who is getting a little fed up with the tech hucksterism.

Very principled and strong decision as always Mol! 👏 ….so much of the internet is poisonous yet difficult to break away from so well done making the brave move!

Your writing is always fab and will always be followed by people! Hope you can still get some video stuff out there somewhere aswel as you’ve become a proper pro infront if the camera!!!! 😊 Your content has no doubt already helped thousands of people with their photography so you should be dead proud of what you’ve achieved with it too 👍

I feel the same way. After TikTok got banned I deleted it instantly, now I can’t get it back and I’m rethinking all of the social media I use. Instagram is pissing me off. I want to burn meta down. I love your YouTube videos. I know more female photographers than male photographers. It surprises me that the online community is so male. Anyway love you, love your work.

Thanks Tim! I know others have mentioned BlueSky, can’t remember if you’ve tried that? But honestly, to me I get generally the same feeling anywhere I go online (re tired of social media). Yeah it seems to be a YouTube and online thing - I didn’t even mention forums but after one minute there I can’t get out fast enough 😂 and of course the circles people run or find themselves in!

I do have Bluesky. It’s been okay. I’m just trying to look at peoples cool photography. I don’t want everything else that comes along with social media. It’s frustrating.

Great read Molly! I think many of us are struggling with SM at the mo. I’ve been really enjoying Bluesky it’s working for me to stay connected with many of the believeinfilm peeps, I do wish more of the sheheartsfilm lot were there though. (Pretty sure you can select what feed you want to show as default. My first is people I follow and the I have a #filmphoto feed next to it, which if I click on it stays on it.) Re: this platform, I’m unlikely to progress with it as I’ve been hearing the horror story of them not dealing with far right nutcases and that doesn’t sit well… 😢

Molly Kate's avatar

Thanks Paula! Ohh I definitely need to figure out how to set a feed as default! And you can create a unique feed? Yeah that is not good at all for Substack’s future…I’m hoping they deal with it

You know Molly, I think your content on YouTube has been fresh aire! Your perspective on Film Testing and your content has really gotten me out of the rut I’ve been in, and had inspired me to pick up my Nikkormat & TLR again!

I’m done with Meta too, and Substack & Discord is my ‘jam’. I linked your last YT Video to the AGO Processor Group on Discord and many members appreciated your content! You are a treasure & inspiration- I look forward to your next post- Todd 📷

p.s. maybe you could post videos on Odysee
